President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow paid a visit to King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in Riyadh today, accompanied by a high ranking Turkmen delegation and Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, the Saudi Minister of Commerce and Industry and Head of the Mission of honor accompanying the visiting President, where they were welcomed by Prince Dr. Turki bin Saud bin Mohammed Al Saud, KACST President, Dr. Abdulaziz Mohammed AlSuwailem, KACST Vice-President for Scientific Research Support and a bouquet of KACST’s high-ranking officials and distinguished scientists and researchers.
After the receiving ceremony, Prince Dr. Turki identified the visiting dignitaries with some of KACST’s goals and missions that focus on research and development and investment products of scientific research to be one of the most important economic influents to boost the development process in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in line with the vision of the Kingdom in 2030 that targets investments diversification, encouraging entrepreneurship as well as reducing dependence on oil as the main source of economic development.
Dr. Anas AlFaris, Supervisor of Excellence Centers at KACST, by his turn, gave a concise presentation spotting the light on the National Science, Technology and Innovation Plan (Ma’arefa 2), which aims at achieving the Kingdom’s leadership in fields of science, technology and innovation on the regional level, bridging the gap between research and industry making effective use of KACST’s science, technology and innovation programs such as research and development (R&D) programs, innovation-supporting programs along with the ancillary programs. The presentation also focused on the importance of the innovation cycle that begins with the phase of research, then development, manufacturing and production, the role of the Saudi Company for Development and Technology Investment (TAQNIA) in investing research outcomes, developing and transforming them into marketable industrial products and services, citing a number of achievements in this effect such as Solar Water Desalination Project, as well as KACSTS’s efforts in the field of space and aviation.
Prince Dr. Turki, then, escorted the Turkmen President and his entourage into a tour in the Nanotechnology National Center which is one of KACST’s most sophisticated laboratories and research centers where the visiting delegation were briefed by the Supervisor of the Center on the Center’s mission, objectives as well as its current and future functions. The guests inspected the cutting-edge laboratories of the Center such as the electronic microscopes laboratory, and applications of these microscopes in materials analysis, generating pictures and images into the scale and analysis of the elements contained therein.
The visiting delegation listened into explanations on some of KACST’s on-going research projects as well as some of its most important achievements, including manufacturing high-efficiency solar cells and laser sensors systems using nanotechnology.
At the conclusion of the visit, President Berdymukhamedov expressed his admiration and appreciation of the giant steps taken by the Kingdom in fields of science, technology and innovation to harness the scientific research to accomplish and serve the national interests of the Kingdom, thanked KACST hosts for their worm welcome and underlined his keen interest in the scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries to serve sustainable development, in a number of strategic areas of interest to both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkmenistan.
