National Cooperation

The National Committee for Geographic Information Systems was established by the Royal Decree No. (388) dated 30/12/1431 AH, in order to organize and unify the systems of geographic information in the Kingdom. Last year, several meetings were held, resulting in the emergence of the National Strategic Committee for Spatial Data Infrastructure, which aims at developing spatial data strategies by studying the current status of spatial data in the Kingdom and developing a plan to unify the exerted efforts in this regard. A steering committee was formed to monitor the progress of the Strategic Committee, consisting of: King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), the Ministry of Defense –General Directorate of Military Survey (GDMS), the Ministry of Rural and Municipal Affairs, and the General Commission of Survey (GCS). KACST has played a major role in these committees, as it is considered the sole provider of satellite images in the Kingdom and the key supporter of geospatial information systems (GIS).
