The Prize:
Almarai company adopted in 1420H an annual national prize to support, encourage and motivate scientists, researchers and inventers in the Kingdom to be creative in the fields of science. The prize was credited by a Royal approval and started there after by an agreement between “Almarai” and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) authorizing it to manage the prize affairs and monitor its relevant activities.
The prize is composed of four branches.
1- The distinguished Scientist Prize:
Candidacy must be for scientists residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia who have distinguished scientific contributions in the field of basic, applied and development sciences and innovation.
2- Creative Scientific work Prize :
Candidacy must be confined to authentic creative works, including published research, patents, industrial designs and other works in the field of basic applied and development sciences.
3- Scientific Research Prize for Women:
Candidacy is restricted to female scientists in the field of basic, applied and development sciences.
4- Research Unit Prize :
Candidacy must be for research units in public and private institutions, such as departments, institutes and centers doing research in the fields of basic , applied and development sciences.
Prize Board:-
The supreme board for this prize is as follows:
1- KACST president –Chairman
2- President of Almarai company board of directors-Vice Chairman
3- Secretary General of the Prize
4- Three distinguished scientist or officials in the country, to be nominated by KACST and Almarai Company
The Board functions:-
1- Appoint members of the Secretariat.
2- Approve the recommendations of the Secretariat.
3- Approve the prize regulations.
4- Approve the prize executive charter.
5- Approve the prize fields.
6- Approve the amendments on regulations, executive, financial and administrative by-laws.
7- Approve the budget and final accounts.
8- Decide on all financial and regulatory affairs of the prize. including approval of the administrative and financial by-laws.
9- Approve the prize winners.
10- Approve the annual ceremony time and location.
11- The Board may block some or all prizes according to the recommendation of the Secretariat if the works did not meet the standard set for prize.
12- Decisions of the Board are adopted by the majority of votes, in case of equal votes, the chairman side shall supersede.
13- The board meeting shall be quorum by the attendance of the absolute majority including the President or Vice President.
14- The Board’s resolutions on the proclamation of the winners are final and not subject to appeal.
15- The Board term is three renewable years.
Prize Secretariat:-
The prize has a general secretariat headed by KACST Vice President and one of the company officials as a Vice President and four members elected by the Board for a period of three renewable years. The function of the secretariat as follows:-
1- Proposing fields of the prize.
2- Announcing of the prize.
3- Supervising the process of screening and selection of candidates for the prize.
4- Supervise the process of arbitration and the nomination of the prize winners.
5- Appoint the prize administrative body for completion of all administrative and operational works under its supervision.
6- Propose the prize executive by-laws.
7- Propose the necessary amendments of the prize by-laws and submit to the council for ratification.
8- Prepare the annual budget and final account sheet.
9- Any works entrusted to it by the Board.
Prize Value:
The value of the prize is as follows:-
1- The Distinguished Scientist (150, 000 SR)
2- The Creative Work (200, 000 SR)
3- Scientific Research Prize for Women (100, 000 SR)
4- Research Unit Prize ( 500, 000 SR)
Prize Branches
1- Distinguished Scientist Prize :
Nominations are accepted from individuals, public and private institutions in the Kingdom for the resident scientists who have distinguished scientific contributions in the field of the prize, according to the following terms:
- The candidate should have abundant and distinguished record through his scientific and practical course.
- Priority in the nomination for the prize shall be given to those who had presented works that serve development in the Kingdom.
- The candidate must be alive at the time applying for the prize.
2- Creative Work Prize
Nominations are accepted from individuals, public and private institutions within the Kingdom who did creative scientific works, such as published research, patents, industrial designs and alike as approved by the Supreme Council for the Prize, according to the following terms.
- The work should be original.
- The work must be conducted in Saudi Arabia during the past five years prior to application.
3- Scientific Research Prize for Women.
Nominations are accepted from female principal researchers in public and private institutions within the Kingdom for published scientific researches, according to the following terms.
- Female candidate should be the principal researcher.
- The work should be original.
- Conform to the methodology of scientific research.
- The nominated research work should be achieved during five year prior to nomination.
4- Research Unit Prize.
Nomination are accepted from research and developmental centers, institutes and institutions in the fields of science and technology in the Kingdom, according to the following terms:
- The research unit should be specialized in the field of basic applied or development scientific research.
- The specialization of research unit should be within the same announced scope of the prize.
Prize fields for the year 2010 :
1- Distinguished Scientist Prize in the field of Zoology.
2- Creative Work Prize in the Field of Electrical Engineering and environmental pollution.
3- Scientific Research Prize for Women in the field of Dentistry.
4- Research Unit Prize in the field of Chemistry.
Terms and Conditions
First : The Distinguished Scientist Award (Men and Women)
Nominations are accepted from individuals, public and private institutions within the Kingdom of the resident scientists who have scientific and outstanding contributions in Zoology field according to the following items.
• Filling the nomination form available on the prize website.
• The candidate must be alive at the time of nomination.
• The candidate should have a rich distinctive record in the scientific and practical fields.
• The candidate work should have contributed to the Kingdom’s community development.
• He should have scientific activities conducted in the Kingdom.
• The candidate is advised to attach the following documents.
- Three copies of the best three works deemed outstanding by the candidate.
- Three copies of the C.V. in both Arabic and English languages.
Second : Creative Work Prize (Men and Women)
Nominations are accepted from individuals, public and private institutions within the Kingdom for the creative work in the fields of electrical engineering and environment pollution, according to the following terms:
• Filling the nomination form available on the prize website.
• The nominated work should be achieved during the five years prior to nomination.
• The nominated work should not be given prize, nor submitted for another prize competition in the same year of the nomination.
• Nomination should be for one work in the announced field.
• The nomination work should have been conducted in the Kingdom.
• The following work must be attached as follows:
- Three copies of the candidate works; in case of scientific reports, evidence of scientific evaluation and acceptance must be attached.
- Three copies of brief resume of the participants.
Third : Scientific Research Prize for Women
Nomination are accepted from individuals, public and private institutions within the Kingdom. The Principal researcher for published scientific research in the field of Dentistry should be female, according to the following terms:
• Filling the nomination form available on the prize website.
• The nominated work should have not be given prize, nor submitted for another prize competition in the same year of the nomination.
• In the case of scientific reports, evidence of scientific evaluation and acceptance must be attached.
• No more than one research in the declared field should be nominated for the same researcher.
• The nominated research should be conducted in the Kingdom.
• The candidate is advised to attach the following:-
- Three copies of the nominated research.
- Three copies of resume of the female researcher.
Fourth : Research Unit Prize
Nominations are accepted from research and development centers, institutes, and institutions in the field of Chemistry, according to the following terms:-
• Filling the nomination form available on the prize website.
• Nomination for the prize is accepted from the head of the research unit.
• The research unit must be specialized in the field of basic applied or development scientific research.
• The nomination for the prize must be within the defined period.
• The research unit should be specialized in the same announced field Chemistry.
A- Manpower
1- A list of the researchers, nature of their work and their scientific qualifications (full time or part time).
2- A list of assistant researchers and the nature of their work (full time or part time).
3- A list of technicians and the nature of their work (full time or part time).
4- A list of administrators and the nature of their work (full time or part time).
5- A list of the unit cooperators.
6- The ratio of Saudi researchers to other researchers.
B- Scientific achievements
1- A List of the published scientific researchers.
2- A detailed list of the patents and scientific discoveries.
3- A list of the publishing media where the said researches were published.
4- Fields of research carried out by the research unit.
5- Documentation directory of research conducted by the unit.
C- Equipments
1- List of equipments available in the unit.
2- Equipment use, maintenance and standardization directory.
D- Procedures adopted in the unit
1- The security and safety guide.
2- The work processes guide.
3- Plans and strategies.
4- Job description guide.
5- Procedures guide dealing with hazardous materials.
6- The applied professional ethics of scientific research.
