KACST has considerable resources and expertise that can be used for the chemical or radiological analysis of different samples, whether to issue “absence of radioactive materials” certificates for Saudi exports, to test the safety of these goods, to provide scientific recommendations, to evaluate certain characteristics including radioactive risks or risks of exposure to radioactivity, to estimate radioactive dosage, or to estimate the environmental and health impact of natural and industrial pollutants. Many government and non government bodies have benefited from these services.
Furthermore, international organizations and resolutions have called on states to enhance their infrastructure in terms of protection from radiation, while encouraging other technological applications of radioactivity and radioactive materials in the medical, industrial, agricultural and other fields. In this context, KACST has long sought to build the required infrastructure and human expertise. The result of theses efforts is the National Radiation Protection Program which covers a number of programs, as follows:
• The Regulations Legislation Program: (Legislative Framework)
o National Law of Protection from Ionizing Radiation.
o National Guidelines for Protection against Ionizing Radiation.
o National Guidelines for the Management of Radioactive Waste
o National Guidelines for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials.
o Radiological Activities Manual.
o Manual of radiological activities, labor and resources licensing.
o Activities Inspection Manual
• Radiological Activities Workers Qualification Program:
o Control of occupational exposure
o Monitoring of public and environmental exposure
o Monitoring of medical exposure to radiation
• Control Program of Levels of Radiation in Environmental Elements:
o Chemical analysis and radiological analysis of different environmental samples.
o Issuance of “absence of radioactive pollutants” certificates.
• Radioactive Waste Management Program:
o Inventory of radioactive waste resulting from the various activities the Kingdom.
o Development of a strategy for the management of nuclear waste
o Determination of the selection standards of the radioactive waste storage and treatment station.
o Location selection of the national station of radioactive waste storage and treatment.
• Quality Control and Assurance Program:
o Maintenance of radioactive equipment.
o Calibration of radioactive gauges (surveying and monitoring).
o Quality Assurance.
• Permanent Radiation Monitoring and Early Detection Program
• Nuclear and Radioactive Emergency Response Program
o Facilities-level radioactive emergency plan.
o National-level radioactive and nuclear emergency plans.
