Participants in concluding activities of the Saudi International Water Technologies Conferences 2011, organized by KACST at its headquarters under the Patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, discussed the importance of water thermal desalination and using technologies and specialized membranes to treat waste water.
Activities of the second day of the conference included two scientific sessions. Dr. Mohammed Albeiruti, Associate Professor, Thermal Engineering & Desalination Technology, King Abdulaziz University, chaired the first sessions under the banner of “Thermal Desalination” and comprehended five work papers. The first paper was presented by Dr. Roberto Borsani
Process and Development Manager, Fisia Italimpianti S.P.A, Italy discussing MSF System: Status and Future Direction while Prof. Hisham El-Dessouky, Professor of Chemical Engineering, Al-Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University who elaborated on modern trends in thermal water desalination.
Prof. Ibrahim Al-Mutaz, Professor of Chemical Engineering Dept., College of Engineering, King Saud University, followed presenting the third scientific paper that went through Forecasting Water Desalination Future in Saudi Arabia. The fourth paper that was presented by Dr. Jurgen Kern,
Managing Director, Kernenergien GmbH, Germany, presented the fourth paper stressing concentrating solar power for seawater desalination. The first session was concluded by scientific paper presented by Dr. Ahmed Al-Arifi, Director, Technology and Science Unit, Saline Water Conversion Corporation in Saudi Arabia who elaborated on Research Trends in Saline Water Conversion Corporation.
The second session chaired by Dr. Waleed Zahed, Associate Prof., Environmental Engineering Civil Engineering Department, KSU, Saudi Arabia, was allotted to wastewater treatment technology and membrane bioreactor where four scientific papers were presented. Through the first paper, Prof. Ing. F.-B. Frechen, Professor and Head Department of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, University of Kassel, Germany discussed membrane technology in water and wastewater treatment for small and mega cities.
Prof. Jun Ma, Deputy Director, the National Engineering Research Center of Urban Water Resources, China, followed presenting the second scientific paper discussing the Advanced Municipal Water Treatment. The third paper, presented by Dr. Piet Lens, Professor, Environmental Biotechnology and the Head of Pollution Prevention and Control Core of the Department of Enivronmental Resources of UNESCOIHE, Netherland, who elaborated on domestic wastewater and hybrid reactors for waste water treatment. The session was wound up by the fourth paper presented by Dr. Allaldeen Bokhari
Director, Center for Environment & Water, The Research Institute, King Fahd University of Petroleum
& Minerals who addressed the electrochemical processes as a promising technology for wastewater treatment and reuse.
